Building Beautiful & Functional Worlds
When designing, always remember these three magic words: Firmitas, Utilitas, Venustatis. It means Stability, Usefulness, and Beauty.
That's the secret to designing things that last, work well, and look amazing. Catherine want designs to be strong and dependable, like a sturdy bridge. They should also work smoothly and make people's lives easier, like a comfy chair. But most of all, she wants them to be beautiful, to make people smile and feel inspired, like a stunning sunset. Weaving these three elements into everything she creates, from the first sketch to the final product is her way of making sure designs not only work, but also touch people's hearts. Because when something is both useful and beautiful, it becomes truly special.
The Power of Firmitas, Utilitas, Venustatis
DESIGN
As an experienced, Certified Interior Designer, Catherine’s work is known to be honest, dynamic, fresh and timeless. She has a discerning classical style while possessing the ability to seamlessly bridge historical and traditional with unexpected modern elements. Stylistically, tradition is the guide, not the pattern. Once the rules are understood, they strategically can be broken. From farmhouse to townhouse, she provides architectural and decorative solutions crafted for the individual but appropriate to the property type.
Just as her personal style is relaxed and open, she is totally at home on the construction site directing subcontractors, installing window treatments, or overseeing the craftsmen and tradesmen. Unpretentious and graceful, her work is thoughtfully developed, evoking, functional, well crafted, effortless and memorable.
Catherine finds pleasure and fulfillment in the actual design process, while collaborating and building relationships with her clients. Ironically, the process is the reward and the finished product is simply a delightful bonus.
Educated with a BFA in Interior Design from Virginia Commonwealth University, Catherine has worked in the design field professionally for nearly 25 years. As a Certified Interior Designer, she has undergone rigorous training and testing proving that she is accomplished in not only residential design but also commercial and institutional, where the focus is on safety, code, egress and ADA compliance, the appropriate use of materials, in addition to procurement and contract administration.
Catherine has owned her own design business since 1999, while contracting with Glave’ and Holmes Architecture in their Hotel and Home Design Studio for several years, as well as The Williamsburg Design Studio. There she collaborated on numerous high end residential and hospitality projects which resulted in several design awards. She continues to operate her successful design business, Catherine Christian Interiors.
Her work is a clear reflection of her commitment to the quality and successful outcome of any project she undertakes and to the practice of Interior Design at a high level.
